Traditional carriage doors swing out from the center with the aid of side hinges and were opened manually to allow horse-drawn carriages to pass in and out. In addition to garages, they can often be found on carriage houses, barns, stables and firehouses.
Contemporary carriage doors keep the appearance of a true carriage door, but often have segmented panels that allow the door to lift up and overhead on tracks instead of swinging out.
